Ostrava steelworks to be equipped with new, more efficient cranes worth 47 million Czech crowns that will be able to handle products of 12.5 tons in weight at temperatures reaching 300°C

Ostrava, 30 June 2018 – ArcelorMittal Ostrava is replacing its current, almost 30 years old, cranes with new and more efficient ones which will ensure reliable service for another 20 years. Six of the cranes will have been replaced with new machines worth 47 million crowns by 2022. The first run will have two cranes replaced at the medium section rolling mill where they are used for transporting products of up to 12,500 kilogrammes into lorries and railway wagons.

"We started the process of replacement at the end of last year. The cranes we are using now have been in service since the end of the 1970s. We will eventually have replaced 6 cranes before the end of 2022," explains Jan Řezníček, project manager in charge of the crane park.

The first run of the replacement process will be finishing in the medium section rolling mill in the third quarter of this year. Each of the cranes has the lifting capacity of 12.5 tons and can lift 6 tons with the help of a high-performance electric magnet. Interestingly, the cranes will enable manipulation with products whose temperature may reach up to 300°C and they will move on 500 metres long rails.
