Employees from Ostrava steel plant gained more than 600,000 CZK for non-profit organisations

Ostrava, 30 May 2018 – the Ostrava steel maker and its subsidiaries have donated money to non-profit organisations in the Moravian-Silesian Region for the twelfth time. In total, a financial contribution of 606,953 CZK was distributed among 38 charity projects. The projects were chosen by employees of the steel plant who actively co-operate with non-profit organisations. The financial gift will contribute to the development of kindergartens as well as leisure activities for children or handicapped people.

"Many of our employees devote their free time to charitable activities. This is why we have supported their effort again this year and contributed to projects with which they were involved in the long term. During the past 12 years of their existence, we have donated 5,710,846 CZK to 481 non-profit projects in our region from our employees’ grants," says Monika Pěnčíková, Head of Corporate Responsibility and Social Services at ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

All employees with a long-term engagement in the non-profit sector could apply for the grant. This year, 79 people used this opportunity. The committee selected 38 projects with the greatest social impact among which they divided 606,953 CZK. Each project received a contribution ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 CZK.

Czech Association of Beekeepers in Ostrava-Zábřeh is among the supported non-profit organisations which received a contribution for renovation of its bee-keeping facilities. Traditionally, there was keen interest in financial support of leisure activities for children; this year, the steel plant supported, among others, the Sokol Baška sports club which commemorates its 80-year-long football history. Other contributions passed to the Brána integration club run by the Centre for Family and Social Care which organises programmes for young people with disabilities, as well as to Wheelchair Sports Club for their summer camp.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is part of the world’s largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal. Annually it produces over 2 million tonnes of steel, which is mainly used in construction and machinery. It is the biggest manufacturer of road safety barriers in the Czech Republic.
