A new 3D scanner to help design new technologies and improve safety at ArcelorMittal Ostrava steel plant

Ostrava, 22 May 2018 – Next to the drone that has become the new "flying serviceman" at the Ostrava steel plant, a new member was born to the family of modern technology helpers. A powerful 3D scanner worth 1.8 million CZK will provide detailed mapping and recording of dispositions, proportions and shape of buildings, facilities, steel constructions and pipework. It will assist designers with 3D design which will make the design of new investments or making adjustments to current facilities quicker and more accurate. It will also be able to resolve health and safety related problems, as an example.

"The innovation will be of great help for many employees. Output from the scanner is ideal for creating the design of new investment units or overhaul of current facilities. We will be able to receive high definition scans of both internal and external localities of devices or facilities, which will make it possible for us to solve concrete problems connected, for example, with health and safety at a particular location or suggest improvement to current technologies", explains Pavel Machala from the Department of Maintenance of Intellectual Property at ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

The Faro Focus S150 3D scanner of over 4 kg in weight is equipped with a class 1 laser. Its imaging resolution reaches 165 MP at the measuring speed of 980 thousand points per second. Its operating temperature range of between -20 and 55 degrees Celsius will enable taking a scan of almost any of the steel plant’s premises. The scanner can be controlled using a touch screen or remotely, for example through a mobile phone.
