ArcelorMittal Ostrava has improved the production of flat bar for the automotive industry. An investment of 80 million crowns in the reconstruction of the cooling bed at the medium section rolling mill will improve the quality of products and increase the quantity produced

Ostrava April 19, 2018 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava has successfully completed the investment in the reconstruction of the cooling bed for controlled cooling at the medium section rolling mill. The result will be a larger production volume and a better quality of the unique flat bars for leaf springs that are used in the automotive industry. The Ostrava steelmaker developed the high-added-value product two years ago and is the only ArcelorMittal Europe´s manufacturer of this product. The reconstruction was made by its subsidiary ArcelorMittal Engineering Products Ostrava.

"The investment will allow us to supply the market with a larger volume of flat bars for leaf springs, which represents yet another step in increasing the share of high-added-value products in our portfolio. “Improving the quality of the product also means increased competitiveness“, said Ashok Patil, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

The flat bars for leaf springs are made of low-alloy chromium vanadium steel with outstanding elastic formability, hardenability and resilience, which make it suitable for highly stressed machine components, such as the leaf springs. Controlled cooling will enable the company to guarantee the maximum hardness of the flat bars according to customers´ requirements, and will also allow supplying the market with increased volume of the higher quality products. The introduction of the new product required a total investment of more than CZK 210 million in the medium section rolling mill.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is part of the world’s largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal. Annually it produces over 2 million tonnes of steel, which is mainly used in construction and machinery. It is the biggest manufacturer of road safety barriers in the Czech Republic. Besides the domestic market the company delivers its products to more than 40 countries around the world. In the Moravian-Silesian region, ArcelorMittal employs 6500 workers. The 2017 average monthly income was CZK 36 646. As a result of the completion of a range of above-standard emission control technologies, the company produces its products with the minimum possible environmental footprint. The sole shareholder is ArcelorMittal S.A.
