Thanks to the capex project worth 40 million crowns, ArcelorMittal Ostrava can start producing a new product for the construction industry

International Engineering Fair Brno, October 1, 2018 - Today at the International Engineering Fair in Brno, ArcelorMittal Ostrava has introduced its new product, i.e., ribbed wire rod used as concrete reinforcement. The investment into the cold stretching technology will improve the competitive position of the company on the rebar market and increase the share of high value-added products.

The main reason for the capex project worth 40 million crowns was to improve the competitiveness of the company on the rebar market. Until now ArcelorMittal Ostrava has been producing hot-rolled wire-rod, a semi-finished product that has to be further processed for final use. Now the mill will be able to offer the finished product to its customers. Ribbed wire rod with diameters of 8, 10 and 12 mm is made of low-carbon micro-alloyed steel and will be available in coils with a weight of up to 5 tonnes.

"Reinforcing steel is used for concrete structures to improve their tensile strength which is low for plain concrete. The steel and the wire rods made of it have high strength with sufficiently high ductility and so they can be used even for the most demanding applications. The advantage of the cold stretching technology is that by precise adjustment of cold deformation we can achieve the best possible combination of tensile strength and ductility in steel," said Richard Fabík, head of the research team from the R&D department of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

The new project enables the company to produce reinforcing steel by hot rolling with subsequent cold stretching. The main advantage of this process is the possibility to control mechanical properties of the finished product. To launch the new product, the research team from the R&D department of ArcelorMittal Ostrava had first to develop a suitable chemical composition of the steel, an optimum shape of the rib and to ensure suitable conditions for cooling of the steel after rolling.

"The wire-rod has four rows of transverse ribs and therefore a rectangular core which will make further processing easy. The well-thought-out rib design ensures sufficient fatigue resistance of the wire rod and its sufficient cohesion with concrete," said Tomáš Kubina, head of the rolls calibration department in ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

The line will be able to produce up to 100 thousand tonnes of ribbed wire rod per year. The process is fully automatic, operators only need to feed the line with material at the input and take out the finished coils.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is part of the world’s largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal. Annually it produces over 2 million tonnes of steel, which is mainly used in construction and machinery. It is the biggest manufacturer of road safety barriers in the Czech Republic. Besides the domestic market the company delivers its products to more than 40 countries around the world. In the Moravian-Silesian region, ArcelorMittal employs 6500 workers. The 2017 average monthly income was CZK 36 646. As a result of the completion of a range of above-standard emission control technologies, the company produces its products with the minimum possible environmental footprint. The sole shareholder is ArcelorMittal S.A.
